X-FILES: I WANT TO BELIEVE

It’s already been six years since Chris Carter put his incredibly popular TV show on the shelf, and the agents Dana Scully and Fox Mulder have been collecting dust since then. Now the X-Files creator has finally decided to let the series back where it truly belongs: on the big screen - to big excitement for hardcore X-files fans such as myself.

Movie information

Director: Chris Carter
Written By: Chris Carter / Frank Spotnitz
Genre: Thriller

Six years after they were fired from the FBI, the ex-agents Scully and Mulder are once again called in to assist the bereau to help find a missing agent. Mulder is as usual involved because of his beliefs in the paranormal. A pedofile priest is their only lead to find the agent as he claims to have psychic powers. In a desperate hunt without any traces, Scully and Mulder have to race against time to find the missing agent before it’s too late. The truth is out there… but to find it, you have to believe.

I would like to start with presenting you with some information to those of you who looked forward to see a movie filled with epic conspiracytheories, extraterrestrial myths, paranormal creatures and biologic mutants. Prepare for an endless disappointment. The first trailer tricked us to believe that the so called hidden threat would blow us away. The only evil power seen in this movie is a normal bunch of evil russians. With an abnormal taste for women.

X-files dad Chris Carter promised us a movie that wasn’t only for the fans, but also for those who hadn’t even seen a single episode. I, on the other hand, can promise those of you that have not witnessed the greatness that is X-files that he’s wrong. All the way from the very beginning, spectators are fed with small hints of things that happened in the show. Other characters from the show suddenly show up without any form of introduction. And when the people on the first row laugh of one of Mulders many sarcastic comments based on an event from the show, then all you can do is laugh along. This is a form of internal humor the nerd bunch has waited a long time for.

Mr. Carter could do absolutely everything he wanted to with this movie as the story takes place six years after the show’s last episode. In addition, he had all these years to write and improve the story, and this is what he gives us? A perfectly normal thriller? Actually the story is so weak and boring, I wouldn’t even call it a thriller. Yes, there was a lot of running, loads of blood, body parts, sharp knives and a bunch of actors, but this doesn’t make it any better. Unfortunately.

Naturally, the movie has it’s good points as well. Gillian Anderson (Scully) plays extremely well and it shows how much she has evolved as an actor the past ten years. David Duchovny (Mulder) doesn’t need to improve. He’s the Mulder we’ve always loved. The movie has it’s moments, althought very few. The use of camera angles and light made the film better than it could have been (imagine that). The agent’s boss, Skinner, makes an appearance near the end. Even though he was there for just about ten minutes, I still take is a plus.

X-Files: I want to believe is very much like a weak episode from the show, just a lot longer. You will get tired of it all after half an hur, and the sight of Mulder and Scully on the big screen isn’t enough to save this weak project. Shame on you, Chris. If you’re gonna make a movie, then could you please include at least one alien. That’s not too much to demand, is it?

Downs:
It saddens me that they wasted such good potential.

Ups:
Evil russians.

STORY: 2
The story isn’t gripping at all, nor is it as scary, bloody or mysterious as they would have us believe.

TECHNICAL: 7
Ever since the days of the X-files show, Chris has used good camera angles and ligthning effects. Sadly, this isn’t enough to save it.

SOUND: 5
The music can only be described as noisy and distracting, although pretty good.

ENJOYMENT:2
You will be bored. Very bored.

SCORE: 2 / 10
